Pastor Profile - Biblical Leadership

As we sought to find God's man to serve as our next Senior Pastor, we spent much time in reading what God's Word has to say about Biblical leadership. We invited all our candidates to spend time reading some of the verses that are important to us on this topic.

We also recommended that all candidates review the Job Description for the role of Senior Pastor at Crossview.

Key Biblical Responsibilities

  • Preaches the Word of God accurately (2 Timothy 4:2; 2 Timothy 2:15)
  • Prays earnestly for everyone; prayer is a priority to him (1 Timothy 2:1)
  • Equips God’s people for works of service (Ephesians 4:12)
  • Builds up the body of Christ to create unity of faith and knowledge of God (Ephesians 4:13)
  • Matures God’s people to become more like Christ (Ephesians 4:13)
  • Mentors others in the faith so they can teach others (2 Timothy 2:2)
  • Shares the gospel with everyone with boldness (2 Timothy 1:7-8; Acts 1:8; Matthew 28:19-20)
  • Teaches to patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage God’s people (2 Timothy 4:2)
  • Shepherds and cares for the church (Acts 20:28)
  • Leads with knowledge and understanding (Jeremiah 3:15)
  • Guards themselves, the flock, and the faith (Acts 20:28, 2 Timothy 1:13-14)
  • Sets an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity (1 Timothy 4:12)

Qualifications

1 Timothy 3:2-7

  • Above reproach
  • The husband of one wife
  • Temperate
  • Self-controlled
  • Respectable
  • Hospitable
  • Able to teach
  • Not given to drunkenness
  • Not violent but gentle
  • Not quarrelsome
  • Not a lover of money
  • Must manage his own family well
  • His children obey him with proper respect
  • Not be a recent convert
  • Must also have a good reputation with outsiders

Titus 1:6-9

  • Blameless
  • The husband of one wife
  • His children believe
  • His children aren’t wild or disobedient
  • Not over-bearing
  • Not quick-tempered
  • Not given to drunkenness
  • Not violent
  • Does not pursue dishonest gain
  • Hospitable
  • Loves what is good
  • Self-controlled
  • Upright and holy
  • Disciplined
  • Holds firm to the trustworthy message
  • Encourages others by sound doctrine
  • Refutes those who oppose sound doctrine

More Attributes of a Good Spiritual Leader

  • Avoids godless chatter (2 Timothy 2:16)
  • Pursues righteousness, love, joy, peace and has a pure heart (2 Timothy 2:22)
  • Not argumentative (2 Timothy 2:23)
  • Shows kindness to everyone (2 Timothy 2:24)
  • Not resentful (2 Timothy 2:24)
  • Gently instructs those who oppose him by pointing them to God’s truth (2 Timothy 2:25)
  • Devotes himself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching, and to teaching (1 Timothy 4:13)
  • Watches his life and doctrine closely (1 Timothy 4:16)
